Elsa has always been a firm believer in sharing knowledge on contemporary topics and intervention strategies. She has therefore been presenting practical, hands-on workshops and seminars to therapists, teachers and parents on different topics regarding therapy and parenting. In 2014 the Playroom Academy was established as part of the Elsa Struwig Centre and is providing high quality training to different professionals in mental health, teachers and parents. The centre applies for CPD points at both SACSSP and HPCSA for all training provided to health care professionals.
We provide training and workshops for professionals, parents and children:
Professionals
Special experiential workshops are presented on treatment protocol with a specific focus. One workshop will be presented each month.
Parents
At the centre we offer parental guidance and support groups where parents gain insight into their children’s world. These groups offer support in parenting and discipline styles and strengthens the parent-child bond. The centre also presents seminars on various parenting topics, like ADHD, Anxiety and Discipline.
Children
During the school holidays we run holiday programs for the children. These programs address specific focus areas and children are required to work within a team setting. This social aspect of the program has an additional benefit in that children develop and practice their social skills and experience belonging within their peer groups.

TREATING CHILDHOOD TRAUMA :
A COMPENDIUM – PART 1 & 2
TBC
Drawing from the concepts of interpersonal neurobiology throughout the workshop series, the benefits of viewing play interactions from the perspectives of the power of attunement, neural integration, healthy attachment, and the development of resilience and general well-being become clear.
During this first workshop, the new and most recent research on the trauma spectrum will be discussed. To treat trauma in children effectively, a therapist must not only understand the neurological foundation of trauma but also the play circuitry in the brain and the nervous system. Their principles will receive extensive attention.
During the second workshop different approaches to therapy will be discussed, as well as how these approaches and theories are combined to result in the Sensori-Somatic Play Intervention. We will look at different types of trauma and how to address it effectively. Relevant case studies will be discussed throughout both the workshops.

MEET THE PARENTS:
INCLUDING CAREGIVERS IN CHILD THERAPY
TBC
Throughout this workshop, I will be using the word parent to stan for any reliable, committed adult care giver in a child’s life. Facing the hard truth about a child’s challenges can often be painful for parents and caregivers and is best supported and cushioned by the help of a compassionate and playful clinician who is committed to sticking together with a family through trying times.
So much of our work as therapists with parents is parallel process work, providing corrective emotional experiences and helping children and parents to find delight in one another again. During this workshop therapists will be equipped to help parents and caregivers the paradigm shifts that is needed to minimise parenting behaviours that polarise parents and children, while maximising the marvellous power that parents have to be Safe Bosses, Story-keepers and co-regulators for their children.

THERAPEUTIC INTERVENTIONS FOR TREATING ANXIETY IN CHILDREN
TBC
Anxiety is a common phenomenon in our daily life. Due to different stressors, children experience threats to their personal safety. It seems as if children experience more anxiety than ever before. Anxiety inhibits a child’s general development and functioning. Unfortunately, most anxiety disorders do not abate with time and if left untreated are linked to impairment in adulthood. Therapy with the anxious child is highly effective but must encompass different elements. It is important to match techniques with the individual traits and needs of every child. It is therefore important to work from a prescriptive and integrative approach.
During this workshop, the delegates will be presented with brief therapeutic techniques from different therapeutic modalities for children and adolescents to address anxiety symptoms on different levels.

LEGO®-BASED THERAPY
TBC
Lego®-Based Therapy is a clinically derived intervention and is explicitly designed to help children improve adaptive social functioning. Lego® is used as a mean to facilitate social, behavioural, and cognitive development. Lego Based Therapy (LBT) is a skill-building approach. The assumption is that if children approve their social and adaptive functioning, self-regulation and problem solving, social deficits are replaced by more adaptive communication gestures/self-regulatory gestures in all relevant settings. The core of the therapeutic intervention is a collaborative process, with inherent interdependence, creating a necessity for joint attention, shared goals, joint accomplishment, social communication and mutual respect and valuation.
During this workshop delegates will learn how to set up, manage and facilitate their own groups. They will also be able so successfully ure LBT with children that has language- and communication challenges.
