Group Therapy
Group therapy involves a therapist addressing a specific problem within the group context. Research indicates that group therapy is very effective for both young children and teenagers. There are many reasons why this is the case. Children in middle school and early high school have attained a good cognitive grasp of what emotions are, and can distinguish subtle differences in feelings. However, they are also acquiring the ability to think abstractly and think about their own thought processes and this often leads to conflicting feelings. As a result feelings can be quite overwhelming for adolescents.
Through group therapy, adolescents can communicate in a way that normalizes these feelings and experiences. They are able to learn about themselves, the impact their behavior has on others, and are able to receive feedback from peers. At this age it is developmentally appropriate for adolescents to prefer feedback from peers rather than adults, which is another reason adolescents are often times more open to this treatment modality. Group therapy is also effective for young children. Children this age have a limited understanding of emotions and can often be very labile and reactive. Guided interactions with peers can increase emotional intelligence and develop social skills that are critical developmental goals for this age group.

Individual Therapy
Play is described as the child’s natural way to express him or herself. It can therefore be described as the child’s special language. The child utilised play to develop certain skills, practice important roles and process and integrate events with emotional content. The unique quality of play makes it a powerful therapeutic intervention.
According to Schaefer (2011:4) these therapeutic powers that play have can be divided into eight categories, namely communication, stress management, ego boosting, preparation for life, self-actualisation, relationship enhancement and moral judgement.
Abraham Maslow stated correctly when he said: “If you only have a hammer as a tool you tend to see every problem as a nail”. Therefore we utilise prescriptive play therapy at the centre. This entails that different therapeutic approaches are utilised and adapted to suit the needs of every client. Thus, the play therapy is for example combined with Cognitive behavioural therapy, solution focused therapy, narrative therapy , lego therapy and somatic experiencing.

Problems addressed by therapy at the centre are:

Trauma is a vivid reality in South Africa and can take on diverse forms including natural disasters, terrifying accidents, being diagnosed with a life threatening illness, violent crime, medical procedures and child maltreatment. Different brief therapeutic techniques including EMI, EMDR, TRE and Somatic Experience are implemented at the centre to assist the child and his/her family to integrate the detrimental effects of trauma.

Assessments
School Assessments, Clinical socio-emotional Assessments, Study Methods
At the centre we conduct a comprehensive assessment of the child’s emotional functioning before a tailor-made treatment plan can be compiled. Different techniques are utilised in order to formulate a holistic profile of the child. Techniques consist of the following:
- Interviews
- Projective techniques (drawings, projective cards, incomplete stories and sentences and fantasies)
- Self rating scales
- Rating scales and checklists

Mediation
Mediation is a voluntary, structured negotiation process that involves two or more parties. It is the art of facilitating the resolution of differences, allowing all involved to design a mutually acceptable solution collaboratively. This method significantly reduces the likelihood of parties defaulting or retracting from the agreement, as they are directly involved in shaping the resolution.
The unique power of mediation lies in its cooperative approach, which often leads to more sustainable and satisfactory resolutions for all parties involved. This is particularly beneficial in family law, where the outcomes deeply impact personal relationships and emotional well-being.
By incorporating techniques from various mediation models, we tailor our approach to fit the specific needs of our clients, ensuring that each session not only resolves conflicts but also promotes healing and understanding.
